Glossary

Common terms used throughout this documentation:

A

Add-On Group

A collection of related options assigned to a product. For example, a "Color Options" group might contain several color swatches. Products can have multiple add-on groups.

Add-On Product

A Shopify product linked to an option. When a customer selects that option, the linked product is added to cart as a separate line item with its own price and inventory.

App Block

A modular theme component (Online Store 2.0) that displays the Uplift customizer on product pages. Added via the theme customizer without editing code.

B

Badge

A visual label displayed on an option (e.g., "Popular", "Sale", "New"). Badges help highlight specific choices to customers.

Base Image

The primary canvas image showing the product. Layer images are composited on top of this base.

C

Canvas

The visual preview system that composites multiple image layers to show customers what their customized product will look like in real-time.

Conditional Logic

Rules that show or hide options based on other selections. For example: "Show engraving options only when 'Gold' finish is selected."

Checkbox

An option type allowing multiple selections. Customers can select any combination of checkbox options within a group.

D

Display Type

How options are presented to customers: swatches, checkboxes, radio buttons, or dropdown menu.

An option type showing choices in a collapsible menu. Ideal for many options or when space is limited.

G

Group

See "Add-On Group."

H

Hidden Property

An order line item property prefixed with underscore (e.g., _uplift_configured). Visible to merchants but hidden from customers in cart and emails.

L

Layer

A single image in the canvas system. Multiple layers stack to create the final preview. Each layer can be tied to specific option selections.

Line Item

An individual product entry in a cart or order. Main products and add-on products each appear as separate line items.

Linked Product

See "Add-On Product."

O

Option

A single choice within an add-on group. For example, "Blue" is an option within a "Color" group.

OS 2.0 (Online Store 2.0)

Shopify's modern theme architecture supporting app blocks, sections everywhere, and JSON templates. Required for optimal Uplift functionality.

P

Properties

Key-value data attached to cart line items. Uplift uses properties to store customization selections (visible) and tracking data (hidden).

R

An option type enforcing single selection. Only one radio button can be selected within a group.

Required

An option group setting that prevents adding to cart until a selection is made. Required groups auto-select the first option by default.

S

Swatch

A visual option selector displaying colors or images. Swatches provide immediate visual feedback for choices like colors, materials, or patterns.

Storefront

The customer-facing part of your Shopify store where products are displayed and purchased.

T

Theme Customizer

Shopify's visual editor for modifying theme appearance and adding app blocks. Access via Online Store β†’ Themes β†’ Customize.

V

Variant

A specific version of a Shopify product (e.g., size/color combination). Uplift options can be linked to specific variants for precise inventory and pricing.
